Aye carumba!

Okay, I can understand comic nostalgia. In fact, I have the Comics Reporter and Animation Magazine bookmarked and stop by occasionally. But, you have to wonder about this bit of nostalgia. I sometimes think the issue is overblown by the racebaiters and politicians. But even I have to wonder what atrasado mental thought this one up? Doesn't the Mexican government have a clue on how objectionable people would find this caricature?

Not relevant to the issue, but I also had to wonder about the Mexicans issuing a stamp in dollars and at $6.50, no less.

As you can imagine, the blogs are all over this one. Several links at Michelle Malkin.

I wonder, really, why should they care? It's a Mexican comic for Mexicans, a postage stamp intended for domestic use, and last time I checked*, Americans don't vote in Mexican elections. So why should they care.

I also suspect that the rest of the world don't feel the need to kowtow to the sensitivities of people who take getting offended at everything to a whole 'nother level. Especially professional victims that aren't even in their country.

We aren't billed as the most sensitive folks on the planet you know. Well, sensitive about ourselves, maybe, but not towards others. Example: It probably was not part of our editorial process to make a quick trip south of the border to ask them if they found the Taco Bell dog offensive. Or if they approved of Pedro at South of the Border **. We call the DC football team REDSKINS and then tell the Indians, "Get a life. How can you find that offensive? They're winning!"

I think Fox has the right idea, if he indeed meant no disrespect and what reason would he have to purposefully insult people, and that is to say basically, "While I meant no disrespect towards you, I also was not talking to you. So I think I'll pass on apologizing to you.

Hmmm...I wonder why I'm so contrary this week?

* Actually, I have never checked. I'm mostly just hoping that this is correct.

** If you've ever drove on I-95 through NC & SC you know what I'm talking about. But did you know it started out as a place to distribute beer just out of reach of the NC authorities? True.

Ding! You are both correct, in my point of view and here's some more of my thoughts on it.

1. It is Mexico's business, not ours. They are a sovereign nation, they can put what they want on their stamps. Plus, it's just a piece of paper depicting some comic art found in Mexican culture in past times.

2. Didn't the Mexican government realize a lot of folks were going to take some serious umbrage at this sort of thing - nostalgic art or not. Geez, what were they thinking?
