When the telephone rings

I've been busy and also had the sniffles for a few days, a rarity for me (the sniffles, not the busy part).

But, I did have one highlight this past week. We received a telemarketer call and I finally had a chance to use a telemarketer script that I found a few years back, saved it in my Favorites and have been dying to use it. But, it always seemed I didn't have my laptop on whenever I'd get one of those annoying calls.

Not this time. The laptop was on and I was sitting in front of it when he called. However, he didn't follow the script for very long and darned if he didn't end the call right after I got to the fourth line.

Coward.

Seems someone put a lot of effort into that script, although the reason isn't clear to me.

I use the polite but firm approach where I say I'm sorry, but I'm not interested. If they disengage, no harm, no foul. If they try to continue I merely state, "Thank you, no. I am going to hang up now," and I do.

I do like the part where you ask them to recommend a toothpaste. That must put them off balance.

I haven't been able to get that far yet, but I would enjoy that one so much.

I liked the owner's approach where I worked. We had more incoming lines than we ever needed, so tying one up for a while didn't matter. When he would get a telemarketer he would politely ask them to hold for just a moment, then leave them on hold until the hold button light quit blinking.

I like that tactic, also. That way you get rid of 'em but don't have to deal with 'em.
