Hey, man, I also qualified with the M-1 carbine back in basic training at Lackland AFB in 1957. We shot the 1,000 inch range, and I fell in love with that little piece that day. I remember the USAF started getting semi-auto AR-15's in 1959 or so. "Made by Mattel" we called 'em.
They were still qualifying with the M-1 carbine in March of '65, but then when I requalified the next year it was the M-16 (not A1 or A2, just plain ol' M-16) :-)
