Well, if that's true today then I must have a 5th grade level education because I don't know half of them!

It's always been my opinion that if a feller really understands the subject, he can explain it to a reasonably intelligent person, using simple words and phrases. If you have to resort to bigger words (which all have small word definitions), then maybe you don't really understand what you're saying in the first place.
Hmmm... I knew quite a few of those, although not all, of course. However, I think the article might be titled 100 words every high school grad could know, as opposed to should know. I don't see the occasion to rise in conversation for a lot them.
Well, the acedemics do tend towards snooty sometimes.
I like it plain and simple, too. But I do have to say that when I was a National Review subscriber I always looked forward to seeing what word Wm F. Buckley would use in his article that would cause me to dig out the dictionary. Some I remember are detritus, claque, moribund, dalmatic and several others.
I probably knew more than I thought R'Ed, I just thought it strange they'd expect HS grads to know some of those.
