Shunning etymological elitism

I like words. I think their lineage (etymology) and their sometimes confusing use in the Enlish language are interesting. I also enjoy word games and it's a rare day that I don't have the Jumble solved* by the 2nd cup of coffee. Also, if I've time, I'll do a daily crossword puzzle, usually the one in the Louisville Courier-Journal. True, the editors are leftist idiots of the first magnitude, but the crossword loads fast.

So, I like words. But, for me, enjoying them is risky, as I'm prone to develop word snobbery. I try not to, but sometimes I slip and say things like, "Goodness, observe the large amount of detritus." When a simple, "Sheeit Howdy! These 8mm Mauser rounds sure blow hell out of them bowling pins, huh?!" would have sufficed.

But, then again, it depends on who you're talking to. That first statement would be very appropriate if you found yourself shooting next to this gentleman.

I think President Teddy Roosevelt was once qouted as saying in his cattle day's "Hasten forward quickly there!" when "Get them moving" would have sufficed.

He must have been herding East Coast cattle.
