The world's largest military aviation museum is at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. I've been to it a number of times. It's packed with military aircraft and aviation displays. It's so full and so big that I defy anyone to honestly say they saw it all in one day. It is a national treasure.

Of course, seeing how I was stationed there and then lived in the area for a total 20 years it wasn't a long trip for me. But if you're some miles away and don't feel like making the drive then go see it the easy way by visiting the Air Force Virtual Museum.

I'm not in the market for a "new" vehicle. I enclose "new" in quotes as I rarely buy "new" vehicles because it galls me that the minute I drive it off the dealer's lot it's already depreciated by a few hundred dollars or even more.

For me a "new" vehicle is one that I've never owned before and is replacing an older one in my stable.

Anyway... MRA... Here's a pretty neat site you can use to search for cars, trucks or whatever wheeled conveyance you're looking for, compliments of Wise Bread.

*MRA? Moving right along. Which was one of the acronyms MSgt Miller, an instructor I had at the SAC NCO Academy, used quite frequently to keep the class, uh, well... moving right along.

NUMOTT? Normally, usually, most of the time. He used that one to cut off any conversation that was getting bogged down into something akin to, "Yeah, Sergeant Miller, I know that's the way it's supposed to be done but when I was at Bumfork Airbase in Texas we used to do it like this.... " MSgt Miller would declare, "NUMOTT!" and that was the end of that particular bit of Bravo Sierra and we found ourselves MRA!

I knew that eating just a bit of chocolate everyday appeared to lessen the risk of strokes. A Canadian study showed that people who ate 50 grams of chocolate once a week were 22% less likely to have a stroke than those who didn't eat chocolate.

But now it seems that chocolate can also bring on a real downer.

Gee, I wonder if the fact that Vitacost doesn't sell chocolate but does market Omega-3 EPA and DHA EFAs, SAM-e, 5-HTP and St. John's Wort which just happen to be the very things that will counteract the chocolate downer have any bearing on the fact that they reported this?

I've been to four pieces of land where our dead are buried: The large one in France above the Normandy beachhead.

Another large one in Hawaii.

One in Cambridgehire, England that holds the remains of those who lost their lives in the Atlantic and in the skies over Europe.

And that last I visited was the cemetery in Luxemborg where General Patton is buried.

I've also been at the German cemetery close by at Sandweiler.

It can be an emotional experience visiting these. It was for me.

The Name Game

The Gallipolis Roller Dam was completed in 1938 and is located on the Ohio River near Eureka on Ohio State Rt 7.

Many years ago I used to travel that road with my parents to visit Aunt Ethel who lived in Gallipolis. We went through Eureka on the way and couldn't miss seeing the dam from the road. The town had erected a large sign proclaiming it home of the World's Largest Roller Dam. I was always a bit amazed that such an engineering marvel was located in this area. I had no idea what a roller dam did but still...

I rarely travel that way anymore with the last time being 2001. The dam is still there but Eureka no longer had the large sign along the highway. While there's a wide spot to pull off to view the dam the official entrance is across the river in West Virginia. Cross at Point Pleasant, head south on WV Rt 2 and near the town of Apple Grove you'll come upon the refurbished lock and dam. But it's no longer the Gallipolis Roller Dam - care to guess its new name?

You can continue south on Rt 2 and should you decide to cross the river and depart West Virginia you can always do so in Huntington. Just take the 6th Street Bridge to Chesapeake, OH. But don't look for a sign to the 6th Street Bridge as it's named something else... take a guess.

Square up that table saw blade

Here's a quick way to ensure the table saw blade is parallel to the miter guage slot. All you need is a carpenter's square, the blade of a combo square and a table saw.

I usually do the measuring tape thing to accomplish this. But now I'm thinking this Woodsmith tip would be a more accurate method.

I had my annual doctor visit today and all is well. Also, I learned that do-it-yourself boatbuilding is popular courtesy of a gentleman I was talking to in the waiting room.

He referred me to this company which he says was the best. I have to confess that while I like woodworking I never considered building my own boat. Picnic tables, fences, dog houses, and a two-story garage are more my DIY style. Still, after looking the website over I can see that if you were into boating AND woodworking that it might be interesting to build your own.

Then again I think of that old joke about the two happiest days in a boatowner's life - that first day with the boat in the water and then the day he sells it. :-)

Here's something I'm going to make for the humble estate. It seems the spouse is always watering something in the yard or garden during summer. So this DIY rain barrel should come in handy. I've got an out-of-sight area by the new garage that will be an ideal location for it.

I can't find it online but this month's paper edition of Family Handyman has plans for a dual barrel setup. That's tweeked my interest a bit as in all manly DIY things two is always better than one. So I just might do that one instead.

That's a term whose origin is uncertain. Personally, I think it's derived from the use of the thumb as a measuring device (a "rule") in olden days.

Regardless of origin you can find a quite a few at this website, Rules of Thumb, which bills itself as having "Every Rule of Thumb on Earth in One Place".

I have a problem with that statement as it comes across as an absolute certainty and one rule of thumb I remember hearing along the way was "Other than death and taxes there are no absoutes in life!"

I take it out of that drawer once a year; take it to the range; put about 24 shots through it to confirm it's still functional (it's going on 50 yrs old, soon); clean it; oil it; and then it goes back into the drawer.

These type of C-130s were assigned to the 67th Air Rescue & Recovery Squadron at RAF Woodbridge. I never gave them much thought when I drove by their parking area when stationed at Woodbridge in the early 70s.

The official story was that they supported the space mission and were also used to retrieve weather balloons. Unofficial talk was they had been used to lift Special Forces folks out of the jungle in southeast Asia.

Whichever story was true satisfied any curiosity I might have had. It wasn't until some years later that I read about their real mission. I imagine that was some ride for the guy in the harness.

If I told you I was going to buy some Winter Bananas you'd likely think I was speaking of the long tropical fruit with a yellow skin that you peel before eating.

That would be wrong. It's actually an apple. The Hoosiers christened it thus in Cass County, Indiana in 1876.

I like apples and it's a rare day that I don't eat at least a half of one. But I pass on the ubiquitous Red Delicious as I agree with the opinion that it no longer is. He certainly screwed it up on the domestic front these last 8 years. I'm not alone with that viewpoint either. That's not the only piece online that doesn't think much of his performance. Congress is certainly not blameless but still George could have used his veto pen to reign in some of the outrageous earmarks and other pork legislation.

No, that's not Bring Your Own Bottle, but Bring Your Own Bag. Particularly if you plan on buying your liquor in the Canadian province of Ontario. It seems the tree-huggers have convinced the authorities there that the plastic bag is destroying the planet.

I'm no hardcore tree-hugger but those bags can be an eyesore. Locally, the newest Wal-Mart in these parts was plunked down on top of large, wooded hill. If we get some high winds then the trees on that hill become decorated with plastic Wal-Mart bags. In fact, there's so many you wonder just where did all of those empty bags come from. Do Wal-Mart customers just dump their purchases in the trunk and throw the bags on the ground? That doesn't seem very convenient for getting your stuff from the car to the house. So, it's a mystery to me.

But however they end up in the trees it can be a sore sight, particularly in winter when most branches are bare. I will give Wal-Mart credit for doing something about it. When it gets particularly bad they hire a crew to fan out on the hillside and clean up the mess.

Which brings another question to my mind. How do they get those bags out of some of the really tall beech and pin oak trees that are scattered about that hillside? Oh, you ask how I know those are beech and pin oaks? That's easy as those two species are marcescent and stick out, especially in winter.

Microsoft makes you go through a list of known applications when you click on an unknown file. It's time consuming and an aggravation. If you know it's some sort of text-based file then a better method is to quickly open it with Notepad. But you don't have that option in Windows Explorer unless you do this Open with Notepad hack.

This will allow you to use Notepad to open a file by simply right clicking on the icon. Also the Notepad will be used to open files by default if no association already exists.
